Sense of security in Austria has declined
The sense of security in Austria has deteriorated significantly. Following recent incidents such as the shooting rampage in Graz and the cancellation of several events due to increased terrorist threats, many people feel significantly more insecure. According to a recent survey, 22 percent of respondents say they feel significantly less secure, with a further 44 percent feeling somewhat less secure. Only 30 percent report that their sense of security has not changed.
Women, young adults under the age of 30, and people with children in their households are particularly affected. In these groups, the subjective sense of security has declined particularly sharply.
Changes in everyday behavior
59 percent express concerns about the safety of their children or grandchildren in schools and educational institutions. The changed security situation is already having a noticeable impact on the behavior of many people: 48 percent of those surveyed say they deliberately avoid (large) events or large gatherings of people. As a result, there were also tighter controls at this year’s Danube Island Festival.
Broad support for stricter gun laws
Against the backdrop of current developments, 77 percent of Austrians are calling for stricter gun laws. Only 19 percent consider the current regulations to be sufficient, and just 2 percent are in favor of relaxing them. Women and younger respondents in particular support stricter legal regulations on gun ownership.
